The Midlands Air Festival is one of the Midlands' biggest aviation events, bringing together historic aircraft, military helicopters, aerobatic display teams and breathtaking flying demonstrations over the course of an action-packed weekend.

I attended the festival on 31st May 2026 to photograph some of the incredible aircraft on display while capturing the speed, precision and atmosphere that make air shows such exciting events for photographers and aviation enthusiasts alike.

From dramatic helicopter rescue demonstrations to the precision flying of the RAF Red Arrows , every display offered a different photographic challenge and a chance to capture unique moments in the sky.

Westland Sea King Rescue Demonstration

One of the highlights of the day was the impressive Westland Sea King search and rescue demonstration. Watching the helicopter hover with incredible precision while lowering a rescue winch showed exactly why the Sea King became one of Britain's most recognisable rescue helicopters.

Photographing helicopters presents a unique challenge. Balancing shutter speed to keep the rotor blades looking natural while maintaining a sharp image requires careful camera settings and accurate tracking. Combined with the dramatic clouds rolling across the sky, the conditions created an atmospheric backdrop that suited the cinematic editing style I enjoy.

RAF Red Arrows Display

The RAF Red Arrows never disappoint. Their display combines incredible speed, precision and perfectly timed formations that have become famous around the world.

One of my favourite images from the day captures two aircraft crossing at high speed with coloured smoke trailing behind them. Timing moments like these requires constant concentration, quick reactions and anticipation of where the aircraft will be rather than where they are.

Their Apollo formation was another spectacular moment, filling the sky with symmetrical lines of aircraft and coloured smoke.

Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress

The festival also featured the legendary Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress , one of the most iconic aircraft of the Second World War.

Seeing such an important piece of aviation history flying overhead is something special. The sound of its four engines and the opportunity to photograph it against dramatic clouds created some of my favourite images from the event.

The formation flight alongside the Bronco OV-10 highlighted the contrast between historic and more modern military aircraft, making for a striking combination in the air

RAF Falcons Parachuty display

Te Displahe RAF Falcons closed another exciting display with an impressive parachute demonstration.

As they descended through the sky leaving colourful smoke trails behind them, they created fantastic opportunities for creative compositions. The combination of movement, colour and changing light made this one of the most visually dramatic parts of the da

Alongside automotive and motorsport photography, I also photograph aviation events, festivals and live shows throughout Birmingham , the Black Country and the wider West Midlands .

Whether you're organising an event, require promotional photography or simply want high-quality images documenting a special occasion, I aim to create cinematic, story-driven photographs that stand out.

If you're looking for a professional photographer in Birmingham with a creative style and a passion for capturing action, atmosphere and memorable moments, I'd love to hear about your next project.
