A Step Back into the 1940s

There are few places in the UK where history comes to life quite like the Black Country Living Museum , and the annual 40's Night is one of its most atmospheric events. As the streets fill with vintage vehicles, wartime uniforms, swing dancing, and live music, it feels less like a museum and more like stepping into Britain during the 1940s.

As a Birmingham-based photographer, I enjoy photographing events that tell a story, and 40's Night provided countless opportunities to capture authentic moments, classic vehicles and the incredible effort people put into recreating the era.

The bluebird bells brought the music of the 1940s to life with stunning harmonies and authentic vintage style. Their coordinated blue dresses and charismatic performance made them one of the standout attractions of the evening, and they were a pleasure to photograph in the beautiful golden evening light.

The Sounds of the 1940s

Music played a huge part in bringing the evening to life, and these three talented singers perfectly captured the spirit of the era. Dressed in beautifully coordinated 1940s-inspired outfits, they performed throughout the evening, entertaining visitors with classic wartime songs and timeless swing favourites.

Their vintage style, warm smiles and fantastic performances added so much atmosphere to the event, making it easy to forget you were in the twenty-first century. Combined with the historic streets of the Black Country Living Museum, it truly felt like stepping back in time.

As a photographer, moments like this are always rewarding to capture. The golden evening light, authentic costumes and genuine enthusiasm of the performers came together to create one of my favourite portraits from the event.

The Mitchells & Butlers Leyland Truck

One of the standout vehicles on display was this beautifully restored Mitchells & Butlers Leyland dray , once used to deliver beer to pubs across the region. Parked amongst the museum's historic streets, it became one of the most photographed vehicles of the evening.

The warm golden light of the setting sun reflected across the truck's polished bodywork, creating the perfect opportunity to capture both its character and the nostalgic atmosphere of the event. Surrounded by original period buildings, it was easy to imagine this iconic vehicle making deliveries through the Black Country more than 80 years ago.

As an automotive photographer, I enjoy capturing not only the engineering and design of historic vehicles but also the stories they represent. This Leyland is more than just a classic truck—it's a reminder of Britain's industrial heritage and the people who kept communities supplied during and after the war.t stand out

A Classic Car in a Classic Street

One of the things that makes the Black Country Living Museum so special is its attention to detail. Every street, shopfront and building helps recreate life in Britain during the 1940s, making it the perfect setting for photographing historic vehicles.

This beautifully restored two-tone classic car looked completely at home parked outside the period buildings. With the West Bromwich Building Society and traditional butcher's shop in the background, the scene could easily be mistaken for a photograph taken decades ago.

Rather than isolating the vehicle, I wanted to include the surrounding architecture to tell a bigger story. The combination of heritage buildings, vintage signage and timeless design creates an image that celebrates both Britain's automotive history and the communities these vehicles once served.

The Black Country Living Museum once again delivered an unforgettable evening, bringing history to life through incredible vehicles, passionate reenactors and a fantastic atmosphere from start to finish.

Whether you're interested in classic vehicles, wartime history or simply enjoy photography, 40's Night is an event well worth experiencing.

I look forward to returning next year to capture even more stories from this unique celebration of Britain's past
